Professor Bob McKean began his training in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu in 1969. In 1974 he became a student of Professor William (Bill) Montero Sr. at the Pacific Judo Academy in San Jose, California. During his eighteen years under the personal instruction of Professor Montero, himself a black belt student under Professor Henry Okazaki, Bob received the rank of yodan (4th dan) in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu from Professor Montero and was a graduate of the Kodenkan Jujitsu Police Course.

 

After a twenty-seven year law enforcement career with the Milpitas Police Department, Bob retired at the rank of lieutenant in 2001. During his career he attended numerous police defensive tactics instructor courses and became a certified law enforcement instructor for straight baton, PR-24 baton, expandable baton, riot baton, tactical handcuffing, carotid restraints and police self defense. Bob is a 1985 graduate of the F.B.I. Defensive Tactics Instructor Course. He taught police defensive tactics for over twenty years for his department, regional police academies and numerous law enforcement agencies in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Illinois and Massachusetts.

 

Professor McKean has been an active supporter of many of the Danzan Ryu organizations. He is a Charter Member of the Kilohana Martial Arts Association and is a retired member of their Standards Board. He is also a co-founder of the Pacific Jujitsu Alliance, a member of Shoshin Ryu Yudanshakai, Jujitsu America and the American Jujitsu Institute. In 2009 Bob was awarded the title of Danzan Ryu Professor by the Pacific Jujitsu Alliance, Kilohana Martial Arts Association and Bushindokan Federation. In 2012 he was the recipient of the Ohana Award presented by the Kilohana Martial Arts Association and in 2013, the recipient of the Luciani Service Award by the Shoshin Ryu Yudanshakai

 

At Ohana 2014, Professor McKean was awarded the rank of Hachidan by the Pacific Jujitsu Alliance and the Kilohana Martial Arts Association.
